The Getaway House’s 6-Mile Bike Ride

To stay cool in the spring and summer we take a 3-mile morning bicycle ride from our house to the Canebrake Resort which overlooks Lake Fort Gibson.

We like riding there because there is very little traffic.

Cars and people are few. In fact, deer seem to be the only residents we see.

To have such a scenic bike ride right here in your own neighborhood  is incredible. That’s what makes the Getaway House so unique.

Outside the Getaway House – Random Shots

We spend time each day to walk the perimeter of our yard. It’s not just about the exercise, though. We like what we see. There are so many beautiful trees. One of these days, we’ll learn their names.

On a good day, you can play ball…

                                                                                                                                  under the clouds.

At dusk, you can see the last remnants of sun reflecting from the windows of our house.

and in the morning, a cardinal.

These are just a few of the things we see everyday at The Getaway House…

A Great Place to Walk by Rich Kenney

Want a safe place to walk without having to leave your yard? Walk a few miles at our place. Four loops around the yard is equivalent to one mile. Not only is it safe but it is also scenic.

A Backyard View of the Getaway House

The house almost looks like a castle from the backyard fence.  You can hear and see birds during the entire walk. The cardinal has become one our favorites.

Having the yard completely fenced helps make it very safe. It keeps our dog in the yard and by our side as we log our miles each day.

An Office with Several Views by Rich Kenney

This is our study, a sizeable room of 400 square feet.

Desk Views

Not only do we appreciate the roomy office but we also enjoy the views. From one window we can check to see what our dog is up to in the fenced backyard, while peering off to the southeast to catch glimpses of Fort Gibson Lake. From the window that overlooks our front yard, we can see visitors at the gate or deer in the field beyond.

A Quiet Room

A very quiet room, I sometimes refer to the office as the getaway room of the getaway house. When you need some time to read, write or reflect, this is the place to go. Though we use it as a study, it could very easily be used as a game room or another bedroom.

A Dream Kitchen by Linda Kenney

When we first toured this house and stepped into the kitchen, my jaw dropped and I thought to myself, “this is the one.”

"This is the one."

When you enter our spacious kitchen you see a floor-to-ceiling fireplace. This modern gourmet kitchen also features a stove-top grill  that is built into the large granite island, two built-in microwaves (one is convection), real peacock feathers encased in glass above the stainless steel counter top, and a Jamaican trellis adorning one of the large windows.

A Fireplace in the Kitchen

This is a dream kitchen for a gourmet chef.

Morning at the Getaway House by Rich Kenney

In the morning, we wake to a deep orange sunlight which makes its way through the many panes of glass in our bedroom. From my side of the bed, I watch as the sunrise rays wash our courtyard and magnolia tree. Even our dog, Madison, is taken by the sun’s brilliance. It frames her shadows (Mad Shadow) against the door leading to the theater room.

The Mad Shadow

In the summer, we take advantage of the rising sun enjoying coffee just beyond the porte cochere. This is the view we see:

Truly, A Getaway House by Rich Kenney

Talk about elbow room - 5 acres worth at the end of a private road. Our closest neighbors (aside from a few distant houses down the road) are deer and cardinals by the dozen.

Deer in our backyard

Friendly Visitors in our Backyard

Looking for a place far from the maddening crowd, the infuriating city traffic, the houses of neighbors you can reach out and touch? That place is this getaway house.

The posts that follow will provide you with the unique features of this castle-like house and its surroundings in a place that Oklahomans refer to as “Green Country.” And that it is…
